From the Tiny, to the Vast: Featuring David Neighbour
To our surprise, David Neighbour has only been capturing landscape photographs for the past 3 years.
Before the stunning, abstract, and surreal landscape artwork you can find in David’s portfolio, he focused predominantly on up-close, macro insect photography.
It’s quite the contrast, but it soon makes sense.
There is much in common between capturing the unexpected detail of a tiny insect not visible to the naked eye and capturing surreal takes of vast sweeping landscapes.
With both, David helps us experience things we would not normally be able to see.
Through dramatic perspective and articulate compositional skills, David shows us, in his words, “Unexpected.. Perhaps ideal or dreamlike images, or even a caricature” of the reality we are all so familiar with.

If you are able to put it into words, what does your artwork mean to you?
"Digital photography offers the chance to capture, or even recreate, a fleeting moment, not always seen by the eye but an opportunity to represent movement, mystery, and hopefully beauty in a still image."
Your artwork has a surrealist take on a lot of the subjects, is this something you strive to achieve?
"Very much so. Hopefully, something that intrigues the eye: something unexpected. Perhaps an ideal or dreamlike image or even a caricature of reality."
"Sometimes the surreal feel is just inevitable: a long exposure of a wave to produce fluid movement is never actually seen by the naked eye, it can only be seen through the photograph. The art is to make it look elegant and fluid, something the brain recognises as a wave but never actually sees."
With landscape artwork, relying on nature must be difficult, how long does it normally take to achieve a shot like ‘Corfe So Soft’?
Perfect mists are notoriously difficult to predict, which is one of the reasons they are so intriguing. Fleeting and rapidly changing, they cast a veil of mystery over the landscape, your eye craving something to focus on which is provided by the protruding towers of the ruin.
Several unsuccessful trips preceded this day, either no mist or a complete fog. It was a full year before I was able to see the castle at its best, being washed over by waves of fluid mist.
Surreal landscapes are prominent in your portfolio, but I also see a lot of astrophotography. Can you tell me more about your passion for this style?
To see The Milky Way, our own galaxy, as a backdrop to the statuesque Daymark Tower or the beauty of Colmer's Hill is the ultimate in dramatic perspective. The vast scale is difficult to comprehend.
Although clearly visible to the naked eye the image has a surreal and dramatic feel. The same applies to the comet photographs, although this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Finally, you have created your own collection of your photographs named ‘Favourite 10’:

Why were these selected and what can we expect to see inside?
Taste being rather subjective it was nice to collect together the images that I feel are the most impressive. I've tried to pick a range and not more than one of any subject. I think this 10 is the best I currently have to offer.
